THE DEPTHS OF PASSION (ABISMOS DE PASSION)
Mexico, 1953, 91 minutes, Black and white.
Irasema Delian, Jorge Mistral.
Directed by Luis Bunuel.
The Depths of Passion is Luis Bunuel's version of Wuthering Heights, filmed in Mexico in the early '50s. It is a highly Hispanic and melodramatic interpretation of what is a highly emotional and melodramatic story. Transferred to Mexico, it seems a story of even greater emotion and passion.
The film was made during Bunuel's Mexican period - working with smaller budgets, with local actors and actresses. Nevertheless, his power of understanding the passions of human nature, his sense of high drama as well as absurdity make the film a powerful experience. It can be compared with the William Wyler version with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon and a later British version with Timothy Dalton Anna Korda Marshall.
