Gross Anatomy

GROSS ANATOMY

US, 1989, 107 minutes, Colour.
Matthew Modine, Christine Lahti, Daphne Zuniga, Todd Field.
Directed by Thom Eberhardt.

Gross Anatomy is not the most promising of titles. It refers to the dissection course in the first year of medicine at the university.

This is familiar material, of the type made popular by such movies as Doctor in the House. However, it is the '80s version. Director Thom Eberhardt (Without A Clue) directs in a cheerful manner with some tears. Matthew Modine is quite an engaging hero, despite his studied indifference and careless style. He enables the audience to identify with the characters and issues. Daphne Zuniga is charming as the expected heroine. However, Christine Lahti has a good opportunity to be a strong-minded doctor with a terminal illness. (There is terminal illness and death, the birth of a baby in a diner, etc.)

There are the expected characters: the earnest student, the demanding student who eventually fails... While the expected material is there, it is enjoyable enough, though not memorable.
