KILL OR BE KILLED
South Africa, 1980, 90 minutes, Colour.
James Ryan, Charlotte Michelle.
Directed by Ivan Hall.
Of interest only as a South African feature film. It is also a martial arts feature film. Filmed on location, it has satisfying special effects for the martial arts presentation. However, in plot it is extraordinary. A deranged ex-Nazi general lives in South Africa. He regrets his being dismissed from Germany during the war. He blames a Japanese rival who has succeeded in business. He challenges the rival to get a martial arts team and pits his own specialists against it.
The main aspects of the film centre on the competition and the intrigue behind it. It is complicated by the hero's defying the mad general and the general using the heroine in mortal combat against the hero. Needless to say, all ends well and the general kills himself - with an imitation of suicide in Spellbound. Not a good film but of interest for those wanting to know something about the South African Film Industry.
