Snow Angels is a grim film. It has two strands running through it, a narrative about a young teenager at school, his relationship with his parents, their separation, his friendship with a girl at school. He works at a Chinese restaurant and one of his co-workers is a divorcee. She has a young child, is estranged from her husband who tends to stalk her.
The film develops these two strands in parallel, the teenager being the connecting point. Later in the film, the woman’s baby disappears and it is the teenager who finds the dead body.
The film is particularly well acted with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell as the estranged couple, Michael Angarano as the teenager. There is a strong supporting cast.
The film was made in Nova Scotia, capturing the atmosphere of small-town life.
The film was directed by David Gordon Green, the director of such independent films as George Washington, All the Real Girls, Undertow – and then, surprisingly, the Slacker comedy, Pineapple Express.
