Saigon: Year of the Cat has excellent credentials for a television film. It was written by prolific playwright David Hare (Wetherby, Plenty, and Oscar nominations for his screenplays for The Hours and The Reader) with director Stephen Frears (films of the 80s including Dangerous Liaisons and My Beautiful Laundrette, films of the 90s including Mary Reilly, films in the first decade of the 21st century including the Oscar-nominated The Queen as well as Dirty Pretty Things). It has a strong central cast.
The film is set in 1975, the last months in Saigon. Judi Dench portrays a middle-aged woman working in a bank, and Frederic Forrest portrays a CIA analyst at the American embassy. They begin an affair.
Their relationship is seen in the light of the collapse of the American presence in Vietnam, the final surrender and the fall of Saigon. The film has its personal focus as well as its international focus – and continues to be relevant, especially in the light of the American invasion of Iraq almost thirty years later.
