FREEDOM FIGHTER
UK, 1988, 95 minutes, Colour.
Tony Danza, Sid Caesar, Collette Stevenson, Geraldine James, David Mc Callum.
Directed by Desmond Davis.
Freedom Fighter is a film about the building of the Berlin wall - and the quarter of a century that it stood there. The film stars television's Tony Danza (Who's the Boss). He was also executive producer of the film.
It was made on location in Germany by a principally British cast and crew. The cast includes Shakespearean actress Geraldine James and David Mc Callum. Sid Caesar has a good cameo role as a bar keeper. The film was directed by Desmond Davis who made such interesting films in the 60s as The Girl with Green Eyes and I Was Happy Here. Later films were not so successful - they include Agatha Christie's Ordeal by Innocence.
The film is in flashback form, the Danza character visiting the wall in 1987. Much is made of the wall, the barrier in Berlin, the desire for it to be broken down. The film then goes back to the days when the wall was set up and the fierceness of feeling between East and West German at the time. It is ironic - and perhaps unforeseen by those making the film -that the wall was to come down only a year or more after the screening of this telemovie.
