The Secret Heart is a popular, emotional melodrama from the mid-'40s, presented with MGM's lavish production style. Claudette Colbert is expert at this kind of film. Walter Pidgeon is at his most genial. June Allyson, almost 30 at the time, portrays a 17-year-old girl with emotional problems.

The film has the various characters suffer, offer themselves in self-sacrifice, win out at the end - with the help of a bit of psychology from Lionel Barrymore. Direction is by Robert Z. Leonard, director of many such movies at MGM in the '30s and '40s.
