No Remorse is a continuation of the Jesse Stone story. Jesse Stone is a police officer, created by Robert Parker in a series of novels. After his marriage collapsed, and some difficulties in Los Angeles, Jesse Stone moved to Massachusetts. While he is involved in police investigations, he has also fallen out with the town council. The police in the precinct are forbidden to communicate with him. Nevertheless, there were two separate murder investigations in which he becomes involved.

In the Jesse Stone films, the narrative is continuous. Some of the characters remain the same and appear in many of the films. The two villains in this film, played by William Sadler and Todd Hofley, in fact have appeared in previous films as has Saul Rubinek as a man released from jail, trying to communicate with his wife, Krista Allen. Stephen McHattie? has also appeared in most of the films as Jesse Stone’s police chief. Kathy Baker has appeared in one or two films and is a strong support.

The film spends a lot of its screenplay on characterisation of Jesse Stone (with Tom Selleck not only executive producing but also contributing to the screenplay). He is a complex character, good at intuition about investigations, following through – with the problems of his ex-wife and her phone calls still plaguing him, his tendency to drink too much alcohol, his difficulties in relationships.

The film is interesting in its own right – but has stronger interest for those who have been following the Jesse Stone films, film by film. Robert Harmon has directed the whole series.
