TRIPLE CROSS
UK, 1967, 140 minutes, Colour.
Christopher Plummer, Yul Brynner, Trevor Howard, Romy Schneider, Gert Frobe, Claudine Auger.
Directed by Terence Young.
Triple Cross is based on the true story of Eddie Chapman, a thief sentenced to prison on the island of Jersey at the beginning of World War Two. While in prison, under the Nazi occupation, he offers to spy for Germany. After training, he goes to England where he does a double deal. He seems to want to be on the winning side of the war, whatever side. Ironically, after receiving his pardon he learns that his records were destroyed in an air raid.
Christopher Plummer is an unusual choice for Eddie Chapman - perhaps a bit too suave. Yul Brynner is effective as the German colonel, Romy Schneider decorative as the countess. Gert Frobe gives his usual performance as a German colonel. The supporting cast includes Trevor Howard.
The film is colourful in its presentation of war exploits and espionage. Direction is by Terence Young, director of the early James Bond films and other successful ventures including Charles Bronson actioners, but also the director of a number of poorly received critical films including The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders and the notorious Inchon.
