A NEW LEAF
US, 1971, 100 minutes, Colour.
Elaine May, Walter Matthau, Jack Weston.
Directed by Elaine May.
A New Leaf is a pleasant comedy which most people should enjoy. It is not profound, but is witty with a certain amount of feeling that could contribute to some discussion.
Written and directed by Elaine May, previously associated with the stage and, former husband, director Mike Nichols, the film has clever dialogue, a humorous use of music and good performances by the stars. Walter Matthau is as excellent as ever (as is Hello Dolly, Cactus Flower, and The Old Couple); however, this performance is a tour de force of absolute deadpan which is equalled only by his role in the little-known Secret Life of an American Wife.
1. Although the story was unreal, it seemed real and made many real points. What were some of these?
2. Comment on the satire of money as Henry lost all his and became poor. How was his wealth satirised (his car. his butler. his talk with the banker)? How was wealth satirised in the staff in Henrietta’s house?
3. Comment on the satire on snobbery in the film. How well did Henrietta show up snobs unwittingly?
4. Did you like Henry? Why? Was he meant to be likeable?
5. Did you like Henrietta? Why? Was she meant to be likeable and sympathetic?
6. The film made much of Henrietta's growth in confidence because of her love for and her feeling the support of Henry. Why did she need confidence? How did it come to her?
7. How did the marriage change Henry? Did he learn love and dependence?
8. Some have said that writer-director, Elaine May, wins a battle here for Women's Liberation. Is this a correct viewing of the film?
9. Why was the film funny?
10. Do you think you learnt anything about being human from seeing this film?
