OXFORD BLUES
US, 1984, 97 minutes, Colour.
Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Alan Howard, Amanda Pays, Julian Sands.
Directed by Robert Boris.
Oxford Blues is an updated version and variation on the 1938 A Yank At Oxford (Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh). It also highlights the youth-oriented film of the '80s, especially with its starts Rob Lowe and Ally Sheedy.
Rob Lowe plays a variation on a hustler in Las Vegas who falls in love with a portrait of an English aristocrat (Amanda Pays). Engineering his way (by computer cheating) into Oxford, he shows how he is out of place and the contrast between the brash American style and the reserved British style. With his pursuit of Lady Victoria, he falls foul of the rowing fraternity. However, he becomes involved - obviously getting his comeuppance as well as falling in love with the devoted American, Ally Sheedy. The supporting cast includes Julian Sands and Carey Elwes, who were to move into international films. Alan Howard and Michael Gough, British character actors, are also in the cast.
An expected kind of entertainment, capitalising on the then popularity of Rob Lowe.
