Peter Pan

PETER PAN

US, 1952, 76 minutes, Colour.
Directed by Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske.

Peter Pan is in the tradition of the celebrated Disney animation features of the '30s and '40s and came soon after the Disney Studios revival of the form with Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland.

There had been silent versions, stage versions and television versions (with Mary Martin) of J. M. Barrie's famous story. Here it receives the best of Disney animation treatment. The characters are bright, the colour beautiful, the blend of sentiment and humour with the English touch a delight for family audiences. There are some romantic and amusing songs in the score: 'The Elegant Captain Hook', 'What Makes the Red Man Red', 'You Can Fly, You Can Fly, You Can Fly', 'Your Mother and Mine', 'A Pirate's Life', 'Tee Dum Tee Dee' and the famous 'Never Smile at a Crocodile'. Disney also employed his favourite child star Bobby Driscoll for the voice of Peter Pan and character actor Hans Conried was Captain Hook. All in all the film remains faithful to the spirit of Barrie's story as well as the plot outline. Disney said that he based Tinkerbell on Marilyn Monroe who was emerging as a popular star at the time.

The film is a delight for parents and children - with the touch of magic and the fantasy of children.
