SNOW ON A HOT GABLE ROOF
Iran, 2011, 95 minutes, Colour.
Directed by Mohammad Hadi Karimi.
Snow on a Hot Gable Roof is a story of a poet, the people who were his disciples, his relatives – and the reactions on learning of his death.
The film reveals a complex character, different relationships with different people, the poet, the snob, the exploiter.
The film is not linear in its presentation of its story: revealing the poet, his death, but many flashbacks as friends and relatives come to mourn him, prepare for his funeral, remember their past, interaction with each other, clash. At the end of the film, the character of the poet is very complex, the range of perspectives that have been presented about him and his character.
1. The impact of the drama, its intensity, personal?
2. The title, the house, the interiors, the garden, the gates? The exteriors to the house, the car, the dialysis? The musical score?
3. The focus, the weather, the ending?
4. The portrait of the poet, his death, as a professor, the quality of his poetry, his life, wife, family, relationship with his students? The students as disciples? The flashbacks, each person giving a particular perspective, the nature of the relationship, admiration, love, sadness, mixed motivations? The cumulative effect?
5. His separation from his wife, her appearing on television, the visit, the people suspicious that she wanted something, her speech?
6. The young man, finding the professor dead, his work in the house, the phone calls, the other students arriving? Grief, care? The car and going to the dialysis? The young man’s infatuation with the poet? Making the fire, the delight? His sadness and love?
7. The girl, her visit, grief, past communication, the candles?
8. The woman, the mystery, her love, advice, the food and the nephew?
9. The others coming, their jealousies, the funeral, the reflection?
10. The nephew, his drinking, love, the poetry, his angry speech, the fire?
11. The final credits and the funeral?
