NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART II: FREDDIE'S REVENGE

US, 1985, 87 minutes, Colour.
Robert Englund, Mark Patton, Kim Myers, Clu Gulager, Hope Lange.
Directed by Jack Sholder.

Nightmare on Elm Street Part II: Eddie's Revenge repeats a lot of the material from Wes Craven's very successful original thriller. This film was directed by Jack Sholder (Alone in the Dark). It was to be the second in a series - with the third film making more impact than this sequel.

Five years have passed. It is still Springwood, U.S.A. A new family moves into the house on Elm Street. Freddie Krueger is still in the ugly and decomposed from of Robert Englund - with his claw nails. He starts to menace the teenager in. the house and begins to possess him. The boy has already had nightmare dreams and is reading Nancy's diaries. The film shows the ordinary American family with Hope Lange and Clu Gulager as the parents. Gradually the boy is possessed by Freddie, has nightmares - especially that lie is picked up in a gay S&M bar by the coach who takes him back to the school - where the coach is killed violently by Freddie. The hero then discovers that the coach has actually been killed. The boy has a girlfriend, Lisa, but at a party, the hero is transformed, especially with a monstrous tongue. He fears for Lisa and goes to Grady, the school bully - although he has now made friends with him. There is a slaughter at the party. Lisa's father wants to shoot Freddie but Lisa does not want to harm Jesse, the hero. However, there is a confrontation between Jesse and the monster and Freddie is burnt again - finally? He still lives in dreams.

The film is more straightforward in its presentation of horror and special effects. It aims for a number of shock value sequences. There are exploding budgerigars, human-headed dogs, sports equipment which is alive. Different is the sub-text of the homosexual panic in the hero and his dream images as well as his friendship with Grady.

The third film was to return more to the atmosphere and characters of the original.
