PRINCESS FROM THE MOON
Japan, 1987, 121 minutes, Colour.
Toshiro Mifune.
Directed by Kon Ichikawa.
Princess From the Moon is a delightfully beautiful Japanese fable based on a traditional 8th century tale of parents who lose their daughter but find a little girl who grows up a beautiful princess. But she is from the moon and has to return. There are suitors, dangerous feats, warriors, village folk, all imaginatively and colourfully presented. The climax owes a lot to Steven Spielberg, a close encounter, Japanese style. There is a dreadful modern end credits song in English from Peter Cetera. But this is a pleasing folklore story with a message about death and immortality. It was directed by veteran director Kon Ichikawa
