Cadence

CADENCE

US, 1990, 97 minutes, Colour.
Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, F. Murray Abraham, Laurence Fishburne.
Directed by Martin Sheen.

Cadence is an effective small budget film about a young man in 1965 and the effect of the army on him. The film is something of a family affair, directed and starring Martin Sheen. Sheen had played Charlie Sheen's father in Wall Street and his other son, Emilio Estevez's father in In The Custody of Strangers. Another brother, Ramon, appears in this film as the guard, Gerald Cessner.

Charlie Sheen is quite effective as the surly young man who loses his father, has been put in the army to toughen him up, wants to get out, is in the stockade for 90 days with a group of black prisoners. Despite his resistance to become part of their team, they shape his life and future. He also clashes with the Sergeant played as a martinet on the verge of breakdown by Martin Sheen himself. F Murray Abraham makes an appearance, unbilled, as the army lawyer. The film setting is in Germany but production was in British Columbia.
