Hate for Hate

HATE FOR HATE

Italy, 1968, 95 minutes, Colour.
Antonio Sabato, John Ireland.
Directed by Dominic Paolella.

Hate for Hate is a typical spaghetti western of the late sixties. Full of action, Spanish location photography, and an enormous and mounting number of corpses. Basically entertaining, but more of interest as illustrating the spaghetti western style.

1. The significance of the title and indication of the vengeance theme, the style of the vengeance theme? How entertaining a western, how valuable?

2. The film within the conventions of the Italian western, locations and music, gunfights, violence, conventional characters? Was the film a good example, better than ordinary?

3. The use of colour photography, locations and atmosphere, western sets, music, special effects especially in the gunfights?

4. How credible was the basic plot? For the purposes of a western and for revenge theme?

5. Audience sympathy for Miguel? As a miner, artist, hero of the film? His relationship with Cooper, exasperated after losing the money? His devotion to Cooper, searching out Maria and Juana? The being a victim of Moxon? His being rescued, dedication to Cooper, especially at the end? A suitable hero for this kind of film? The nature of his heroics?

6. The contrast with the character of Cooper, his background, wife and daughter, his daughter's not knowing his identity, relationship with Moxon, motivation for his robberies, prison and escape, the vengeance against Moxon, the false suspicion of Miguel, the inevitability of his death?

7. How credible were the other characters, conventional for these films:
Coyote as the good, Moxon as the evil one? The heroic Maria, the heroine Juana?

8. Comment on the atmosphere of mining, towns, the outlaw west, prisons, shootouts?

9. Comment on the exploration of themes of the west, lawlessness, ambitions and environment, money, good and evil, the identities of the west and their effect on the later generation. How satisfying was the resolution? A satisfactory conventional western?
