Dr Doolittle

DOCTOR DOOLITTLE

Rex Harrison, Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley, Richard Attenborough, Peter Bull, William Dix, Geoffrey Holder, Norma Vadin.
Directed by Richard Fleischer.

Doctor Dolittle is Hugh Lofting’s character, the doctor at Puddleby -on-the- Marsh who is able to talk to animals but who is looking for the Great Pink Seasnail in order to learn its language. Rex Harrison obviously enjoys himself in the role of Doctor Dolittle, very much in the vein of his Professor Higgins, though more genial. Samantha Eggar is an artificial love interest. However, Anthony Newley, musical composer with Leslie Bricusse of Stop the World, I Want to Get Off, is Doctor Dolittle’s assistant. There is an enjoyable performance by Richard Attenborough as Albert Blossom, the circus master who has a Push Me- Pull You.

The film was big-budget, big in ambition – wanting to follow the success of The Sound of Music. However, it did not achieve the success that was expected. However, in the decades afterwards, it has been a film to delight many children and family audiences. There are a range of songs, especially ‘Talk to the Animals’ for which Leslie Bricusse won an Oscar. (There was also an Oscar for special effects.)

The story was resurrected, transferred to the United States and made a star vehicle in the 1990s for Eddie Murphy – producing a very popular sequel as well.
