BEST SELLER
US, 1987, 95 minutes, Colour.
James Woods, Brian Dennehy, Victoria Tennant, Paul Shenar.
Directed by John Flynn.
Best Seller is an action-packed thriller from its opening with an attempted robbery by men with Nixon masks in 1972 to its taking up its themes in the 80s: the wounded policeman from 1972 having become a successful author but still working on the force, confronting the criminal who shot him and who has been a hitman for a wealthy businessman. The hitman wants his biography written - and an expose of his former boss. The two work together, highlighting American buddy system, one not entirely trusting the other but eventually gaining a mutual respect as they track down witnesses, explore the background of the killer. Complications arise with the author's sixteen-year-old daughter and her being kidnapped by the businessman. The ending is symbolic rather than credibly realistic but it makes its point.
The screenplay, written by writer-director Larry Cohen (The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover, It's Alive, Q the Winged Serpent), is meatier than that of a lot of thrillers - strong situations, strong and pointed dialogue. The film is also carried by the performances - a comparatively restrained Brian Dennehy as the policeman and a manic James Woods as the killer. The film was directed by John Flynn, director of a number of thrillers including The Outfit, The Jerusalem File, Rolling Thunder.
