That Midnight Kiss was a popular MGM musical of the late 1940s. It had the operetta star of the period, Kathryn Grayson. It also starred Jose Iturbi as himself, pianist and conductor.
However, the film introduced Mario Lanza and has a great significance because of that. The story of a truck driver who wants to become an opera singer is not too different from that of Mario Lanza himself. At this stage he was 28, with a fine voice and a good screen presence. His best film was The Great Caruso in 1951. Fired from The Student Prince, his singing was mimed by actor, Edmond Purdom. He was to make Serenade in 1956 and two films in Rome, The Seven Hills of Rome and For the First Time before his untimely death at 38 in 1959.
The film was directed by Norman Taurog who won an Oscar for Skippy in 1931 and during the 1950s and sixties directed a number of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedies as well as Elvis Presley musicals.
The film offers an opportunity to hear opera arias as well as some popular songs, especially Jerome Kern’s They’ll Never Believe Me.
