Janet Mc Teer, Kimberley J. Brown, Gavin O’ Connor, Jay O. Sanders, Lois Smith, Michael J.Pollard.
Directed by Gavin O ’Connor.
Tumbleweeds is a small budget film that was a critical success and Janet Mc Teer was nominated for an Oscar for best actress. She is excellent, a British stage actress perfectly embodying a carefree woman from the American south. Kimberly J. Brown is also excellent as Ava, her daughter, matching Janet Mc Teer as performance and portraying the very interesting couple.
The material is rather familiar, a mother and daughter story, but the performances and the writing and the general positive atmosphere make for an engaging experience.
The film was written by Gavin O’ Connor and Angela Shelton who had been married but divorced prior to the making of this film. It is based on Angela Shelton’s own experience with her mother. Gavin O’ Connor appears effectively as the truckie, John. O’ Connor went on to direct some successful films including power and the Oscar-nominated, warriors. There is a genial performance by Jay O. Sanders as a co-worker.
The film is a pleasing road movie, move from North Carolina through Missouri to California and San Diego.
