The Scapegoat is based on a novel by Daphne du Maurier. She was the author of a number of novels which became very popular films including Jamaica Inn, My Cousin Rachel, The Birds and, especially, Rebecca.
The Sscapegoat was filmed in 1958 with Alec Guinness in the double role of the teacher and the ne’er-do-well. Bette Davis portrayed the arrogant mother, Pamela Brown the sister. It was directed by Robert Hamer, director of such films as Father Brown and Kind Hearts and Coronets.
This film was directed by Charles Sturridge who made his initial impact with the television version of Brideshead Revisited. He also directed A Handful of Dust and Where Angels Fear to Tread.
Welsh actor, Matthew Rhys, does very well and the dual role. Eileen Atkins is the mother, Andrew Scott his brother, Jodhi May, his sister. Phoebe Nichols is the maid who recognizes the truth.
The film is set in 1953, the time of the coronation, and enthusiasm for the royal family and hopes for a new Britain, moving away from the upstairs-downstairs class distinctions.
While the plot might strain some credibility, Matthew Rhys’s performance makes it quite credible.
