Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came is a product of the late '60s, echoing the ambivalence towards authority, the military, police and law and order. (The film was to be used in the '80s as the basis for another rebellion story, James Garner and C. Thomas Howell in Tank.)

The film was directed by Hy Averback (I Love You Alice B. Toklas, The Great Bank Robbery). It has a strong cast of veterans who all give solid performances. The film highlights the antagonism towards the military in American towns, the redneck bullying of the extreme Right in the American towns. A lot of the humour is verbal - building towards the farcical confrontation with the tank at the end of the film. Brian Keith is appropriately gruff. Tony Curtis gives his conman performance with great gusto. Ernest Borgnine is the redneck sheriff. Ivan Dixon is the sympathetic black sergeant. Suzanne Pleshette is the love interest. Tom Ewell, Bradford Dillman and Arthur O'Connell are about. Don Ameche is surprisingly effective as the colonel and Christopher Mitchum also appears. Grady Sutton as the Reverend does a take-off of his style of sissy comic from the '40s films.
