A political drama set in Andalusia which may make an impact in Spain but may be too complex and recondite for other audiences.
The film begins with an episode, a frantic car drive, a wounded passenger, his being dumped at a hospital and the others driving on – with the driver, Victor, confronting a young woman, Nora.
The action then moves on six years with a focus on Abel, an aspiring politician, dedicated to ousting corruption and helping the poor. He is supported by his wife – Nora. The film takes place over four days, focusing on the character of Abel, his manager, Martin, their plans for public relations, especially with a photo interview by friend from the past. There is to be a party on the Sunday to celebrate his move into power the next day.
However, there are complexities, Nora going to visit the driver of the car in the initial incident, paying him money – and, rather difficult plot threads for the audience to gather, as to who was in the car, why they were there, dealings with money, the father of the driver who later went to prison. The driver, Victor, now threatens to expose Abel. Also in the action is an actress, former friend who suddenly appears, tries to support Nora, is seductive with Victor, but feels unable to contribute to the situation.
There are also sequences with Victor and his mother, her dementia, his devotion to her, and the care given to her by the actress.
Victor finally comes to confront Abel, victor rather despairing, Nora at the party, confronted by Abel – and finally deciding to leave. The film has strong moments – but may be too difficult for the audience.
