El Cid is a spectacle, the kind of film made in the late 50s and early 60s, especially with Charlton Heston, coming soon after Ben Hur. Here he is teamed with Sophia Loren who won an Oscar that year for the Italian film, Two Women. The film has an international supporting cast from Italy, France, England and Australia’s Frank Thring.

It was one of several spectacles produced by Samuel Bronston (King of Kings, 55 Days at Peking, Fall of the Roman Empire). It was directed by Anthony Mann, a competent director of many genres – but especially a series of films during the 1950s, several of them westerns, with James Stewart.

The film is set in the 11th century, wars within Spain itself as well as the confrontation with the Moors coming from Africa. Charlton Heston plays the leader Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, an admired leader who confronts various enemies, but kills the father of his future wife, played rather vengefully by Sophia Loren.

The main focus of the film is the attack by the Moors, El Cid’s battles against them, his death – and the famous propping him up on his horse to give the Moors the impression that he was still alive or had been resurrected, leading to their rout.

The film is rousing, fine to look at, has an Oscar-nominated score by Miklos Rosza.

The film is interesting to look at in view of changes in attitudes about East and West, Christianity and Islam at the end of the 20th century and into the 21st century.
