EAST OF SUDAN
UK, 1964, minutes, Colour.
Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Sims, Jenny Agutter.
Directed by Nathan Juran.
East of Sudan is a colourful British matinee adventure. Surprisingly the cast is led by Anthony Quayle and Sylvia Sims with Derek Fowlds (Yes Minister) in an early role and Jenny Agutter as a young girl.
Produced by Charles Schneer (producer of many of the Ray Harryhausen fantasy adventures) and directed by action adventure director, Nathan Juran, the film seems to be patched together from a lot of previous British African and adventure movies. The effect is quite uneven. The characterisation is basic, the storyline fairly predictable (blend of African Queen and King Solomon's Mines). The film is set in the period of the fall of Khartoum, with echoes of General Gordon and the Mahdi.
Colourful by basic adventure.
