Bowfinger

BOWFINGER

US, 1999, 93 minutes, Colour.
Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Heather Graham, Terence Stamp, Christine Baranski, Robert Downey Jnr, Barry Newman.
Directed by Frank Oz.

Bowfinger was a critically acclaimed comedy, a successful vehicle for both Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. It is based on a screenplay by Steve Martin.

The film is set on the periphery of Hollywood, the unemployed actors who have little talent but have great hopes, the eccentric director who has very little money but whose life ambition is to make a movie. The film also shows the glamorous action star and his world of paranoia and psychological treatment. This all combines into a fine comedy when the director has the brainwave that he will film the star without his knowing it and create a film out of these scenes. Needless to say, it ends up with a Hollywood premiere and everybody happy with what is essentially a very derivative and trashy film. But, Bowfinger might be seen as a variation on the Ed Wood story with Steve Martin's Bowfinger almost as optimistic as Ed Wood and as admiring of the sequences that he films as Wood was. In fact, Chubby Rain, the title of the film within the film here, is not all that different from Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Steve Martin is at his best, speaking his own dialogue and witticisms. Eddie Murphy is also very good, completely believable as the paranoid action star as well as his shy and awkward brother. Murphy has shown, in such films as The Nutty Professor, Seals, that he is an excellent mimic. Heather Graham is very good, a variation on her role in many films including Boogie Nights, the ingenuous would-be star who sleeps her way to the top without any indication that she has any bad conscience at all. Terence Stamp is believable as the psychological guru, Christine Baranski gives another of her excellent comic performances and Robert Downey Jnr has a few moments as a bemused producer. Direction is by Frank Oz, who worked so well as Miss Piggy and other characters with The Muppets and directed a range of comedy including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin, Little Shop of Horrors, In and Out.
