Viaggio in Italia/ Journey into Italy

VIAGGIO IN ITALIA (JOURNEY TO ITALY)

Italy, 1953, 97 minutes, Black and white.
Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders.
Directed by Roberto Rossellini.

Journey to Italy was written and directed by Roberto Rossellini. It was one of several films made with his then wife Ingrid Bergman. The background of the making of Stromboli and Bergman's leaving her husband for Rossellini had caused a furore - which influenced the work of the couple during the '50s.

The film is simple in its plot - but relies more on two people moving in the Italian landscapes and in Italian society. The film, with subtlety, portrays Italy of the '50s with its heritage. It also portrays society. The film offers a great deal of insight - even though the audience is not as emotionally involved with the central couple as might be.

The film has a cinematic simplicity on the surface but has great depths of meaning and has been widely admired by film-makers - including Bernardo Bertolucci who refers to a character in his film Before the Revolution, having seen it 15 times.
